Joel S. Silver
Telling stories with sound
Joel S. Silver is a Toronto based composer, producer, writer, educator, custom synthesizer builder, and immersive experience creator.
Originally a trained pianist and percussionist, Joel attended York University, where his focus quickly shifted to Electronic/Electroacoustic Composition and South Indian Rhythmic Theory. However, when his friends in the film, theatre, and dance departments started asking him to score their projects, he found his true passion.
Since then, Joel has created music for hundreds of tv shows, films, commercials, dance pieces, installation art works, and live performances. Whether it is brooding soundscapes, hybrid orchestral scores, driving EDM, classic animation, quirky hip-hop, or anything in between, Joel excels at understanding character, plot, subtext and tone to creating the right music for your project. His clients have included BBC, CBC, Channel 4 (UK), Discovery, National Geographic, Yamaha Canada Music Ltd., Much Music, SexTV, TLC, Netflix, Travel, W Network, and others. He was part of the team that brought music to The Voice, Queer Eye, Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, The Real Housewives franchises, Pawn Stars, Saturday Night Live, and many more popular programs.
In recent years, Joel has branched out into custom hardware and software synthesizer design and building, as well as creating Immersive Experiences (Escape Rooms and XR). Joel was the Digital Innovation Hub's "Innovator In Residence" for Spring of 2026, where he explored generative music, past and present, in all its forms.
